Have you ever wondered when is the right time to get your instrument repaired? Or what to look for when determining if it needs maintenance work?
Here at Shining Light Music, it is our goal to help you understand all these things about your instrument and how to care for it!
When Do I need To Get My Instrument Repaired?
It is important to pay close attention to the way your instrument (or your student’s instrument) behaves when it is being played. If something on the instrument sounds different from normal, or any of the keys or valves get stuck or don’t move properly, or a string is rusty or broken – these are all things to watch for on an instrument.
Sometimes it is easier to tell if something is wrong than other times. Basically, if anything on the instrument isn’t acting the way it typically does, it is a good idea to take the instrument to a repair shop to have it looked over.
At Shining Light Music, we give free estimates of repairs! If you bring in an instrument, our professional repair technicians will look it over and let you know what needs to be fixed on it. Then they will let you know about how much it would cost to fix it.
It is never a bad idea to get your instrument looked over. Once you know what is wrong with it, you can decide from there if you want to fix it or not!

Why Do I Need An Instrument “Checkup?”
Even if your instrument doesn’t have any visible problems, we still encourage you to take it in for a checkup every 6 months.
By having someone look over your instrument every 6 months, you can sometimes avoid problems before they occur! Repair technicians can catch things like breakages, loose springs/keys, rust or wear on the inside of the instrument and more.
Sometimes there are problems occurring that aren’t always visible to the eye of the musician. It is beneficial for you to have your instrument looked over on a regular basis.
How Do I Get My Instrument Repaired?
To get an instrument repaired at Shining Light Music, you can drop it by our store at any time! For woodwind instruments, our repair technician is only in-store for certain hours. But, we can accept instruments at any time for him to look at when he gets back.
For brass and stringed instruments, our repair technicians work from other locations, so it may take a day to transport the instrument to them and back.
It is a good idea to plan when you will drop your instrument off at the shop. Sometimes repairs will take awhile, or there will be a line of instruments in front of yours that need to be completed first. Planning to drop the instrument off on a break from school is the most popular choice. Summer is a great time to get instruments repaired, as well as winter break and spring break.
How Much Do Repairs Cost? And How Long Will They Take?
While this question is the most common question, it really cannot be answered until the repair technician looks at the instrument. Sometimes the problem that you think is occurring, is really just the surface level result of a deeper problem with the instrument.
It may be frustrating to have to wait for an answer about the cost of repairs, but that’s why we give free estimates!
We will always give our customers the opportunity to turn down repairs based on the estimate.
We hope that this information is helpful to you! As always, if you ever have questions about our Instrument Repair Services, you can give us a call at 816.347.0099 or contact us here. We love to answer questions and help you receive the best service possible!
